說起雅思閱讀,很多“烤鴨”的一致感受就是:做!不!完!先拋開海量生詞、解題技巧不熟練和定位出錯,很多“烤鴨”認為“只有讀完全文才能做完題”。
然而,并不是!
學習過英語論文寫作或者常讀外刊的同學應該知道,英語文章寫作忌諱重復。為了避免重復,就會使用大量的指代,也就是我們從一開始學習英語就會接觸到的“代詞”。
說起代詞,大家肯定都能想到人稱代詞、指示代詞、物主代詞、不定代詞等等。大家肯定都知道概念,但是放在雅思閱讀文章中,還會用嗎?
Skimming(即略讀),如果你掌握了Skimming的技巧,那么你能少讀不少的篇幅。我們首先就來看一下指代在Skimming上的用法。我用C6T2P2的句子結尾匹配題舉個栗子。

The increasing self-reliance of many elderly people is probably linked to a massive increase in the use of simple home medical aids. For instance, the use of raised toilet seats has more than doubled since the start of the study, and the use of bath seats has grown by more than 50%. These developments also bring some health benefits, according to a report from the MacArthur Foundation's research group on successful ageing. The group found that those elderly people who were able to retain a sense of independence were more likely to stay healthy in old age.
我們審題后,能將Q23定位在原文第8段,并且通過第一句話的self-reliance, is probably linked to鎖定答案G。但是這一段后面還有三句話是否要讀?Q24是否也會在這段出題??我們來分析一下:
第二句話以For instance開頭,我們知道For instance/ example這種表達,前一句話為theory部分,后面是具體case,所以此段第二句話仍為第一句話做案例闡述。
第三句話以These開頭,很明顯,還是指代上文,所以跳過不用讀。最后一句話主語為The group,定冠詞the指代的肯定是上文已經出現過的某group,并且這句話也出現了第一句中self-reliance的同義替換independence,由此我們可以判斷,這篇文章的句子結尾匹配題極有可能為一道題對應原文一段的內容。
當然,雅思真題中在代詞上出題的不在少數,C9T4P1就是非常典型的一篇文章。我們來看看這篇文章的一道判斷題:
Q3 Marie was able to attend the Sorbonne because of her sister's financial contribution.
原文:
Paragraph 2 … From her earnings she was able to finance her sister Bronia's medical studies in Paris, on the understanding that Bronia would, in turn, later help her to get an education.

通過題干中的Sorbonne很容易就定位在了原文第三段,讀來讀去發現沒有出現her sister's financial contribution,于是很多同學就放心的寫下了NOT GIVEN。為何沒有出現題目關鍵詞?因為出現了this這個單詞。需要我們回到第二段尋找this指代的內容,即Bronia would, in turn, later help her to get an education。
再舉個栗子,C9T4P2中的人名理論匹配題。
Q21 A child's awareness of self is related to a sense of mastery over things and people.
原文:Paragraph B
Cooley (1902) suggested that a sense of the self-as-subject was primarily concerned with being able to exercise power. He proposed that the earliest examples of this are an infant's attempts to control physical objects, such as toys or his or her own limbs. 做完這道題需要讀完原文對應的三句話內容,但我見過學生有只讀一句話或兩句話就做題的,然后說:老師,這個人沒有對應的理論…
我們來看一下。
第一句話出現人名Cooley,這肯定得讀,畫出這句的關鍵詞self-as-subject,exercise power,發現題干中沒有對應內容。第二句話以he開頭,肯定指代上一句的Cooley了,他在這句的主要觀點是嬰兒會嘗試控制物品(當然,不認識physical objects的同學可以通過后面的such as推測出含義)。
題干中沒有單獨的一道題是說小孩自我意識的形成與控制物品有關系,到這里,很多同學就慌了:難道這個人與做題無關?一定要注意,后一句話還有一個this指代呢,讀完了就能發現一個并列關系physical objects and other people,從而鎖定Q21。
希望這幾個簡單的例子能提醒各位烤鴨,做題不要慌,先弄清指代內容,再決定是略讀還是一定讀!
