Hey everyone, it’s Stephane from Talkways again

So, a natural thing that started happening when I began to travel was that

I started to make friends with people from different places
我開始交到不同國家的朋友
So if you look at Facebook, Twitter, you have messages coming in from different languages
所以在我用Facebook或者是Twitter的時候，大家發的狀態有很多不同的語言
When talking to people, I have to use Facebook Messenger, WeChat, Skype, Viber, KakaoTalk,
Whatsapp, and the list keeps on getting longer and longer and longer
或者是當我在跟朋友發信息的時候，現在有越來越多的聊天工具
Facebook Messenger，微信，Skype，Viber，KakaoTalk，Whatsapp，等等
But when my friends are talking to me they started using characters to express how they are feeling
然后大家都會在對話的時候使用很多不同的字母和符號
People from different places, they are going to use different characters so I had to get used to them
因為朋友來自不同的國家，我也要慢慢習慣這些不同的用法
But the simplest one out of all of them, and I think we all know it, is LOL
不過所有這些里面，大家可能都知道的，最簡單的LOL
Which is an abbreviation for laugh out loud
是“開懷大笑”的字母簡寫
It’s commonly used when people think something is funny and they just type it
一般在我們覺得一件事情很好笑的時候會用到
However, saying everyone uses LOL is not quite true
盡管如此，并不是所有人都用LOL
In Spanish countries, Spanish speaking countries, you have jajajajaja, J-A-J-A
比如在西班牙語國家，你會用“jajajaja”
For them, the J sound is “Ha”
因為在西班牙語里，“J”發“哈”的音
So it’s like ha ha ha ha ha
所以聽起來跟哈哈哈哈一樣
InKorea, they use different characters, they go with K
在韓語里，他們用的則是字母K
So it’s like kkkkkkk
比如KKKKK
It’s like the jajajaja turning into hahaha, but the Korean version of it
這跟jajajaja變成哈哈哈哈的用法一樣
InJapan, it’s a little bit more awkward, they use wwwwww
日語的情況則比較奇怪，他們用wwwww
Imagine saying wwwww over and over again, it makes no sense
試試連著念w，聽起來很滑稽對吧
But the w is for the character for Warai, which means to laugh, it’s a smile
但是日語里的這個w代表的是Warai“わらい”，也是日語里笑的意思
So instead of typing that character, you take W, and you add it over again
所以有的時候大家不把字拼出來，只是用連續的字母w
In French speaking countries there is an interesting case
法語國家的表現形式也很有意思
It sort of has LOL, but they use MDR
跟LOL差不多，但是他們用MDR
So what’s MRD?
MRD是什么？
It’s short for mort de rire, which means dying of laughter
是mort de rire的簡寫，意思是“笑死了”
But when comparing all of them actually
當我開始對比所有這些的時候
the ones that I found to be the most interesting are actually the ones used in Asian countries
我發現亞洲國家的是最有意思的
Thailandhas 55555, and it has the sound ha ha ha ha ha
比如如果在泰國用55555，發音是哈哈哈哈
That’s why it’s used when people try to say something is funny, or when you are trying to say lol
大家會像用LOL一樣用55555
But in Chinese, it means something totally different, 555, you are crying
但是在中國，他的意思就完全不一樣了，是嗚嗚嗚，表達你哭了
If you look at other characters
咱們再看看別的
For 8, In Japan it means Hachi, so when you write 8888, it’s like pachipachipachi, like you are
clapping your hands
比如數字8，日語的發音是Hachi，所以當你寫出來8888的時候，跟鼓掌的聲音pachipachi很像，表示你在鼓掌
But in Chinese, if you write 8, like 88888, that’s like bye-bye
但是在中文里，如果你寫88888，那是在說拜拜
It’s interesting, it takes the bye-bye of English, but then you add the Chinese influence to it, and
that’s how you say bye to someone
這很有意思，本來拜拜這個用法是從英語里來的，在中國文化影響之后，可以使用888來道別
So the same numbers, 55555, which means laughter in language and crying in another language
所以同樣的數字，55555，在一個語言里是笑，而另一種語言里是哭
And 88888, meaning bye-bye in one language and clapping your hands in another language
而88888，在一個語言里是道別，而另一個里是鼓掌
That was quite interesting, but I started looking into those characters even more and those
Internet phrases
這對我來說很有意思，所以我開始更深入了解更多的網絡用語
I found that Chinese has quite a few complicated ones
然后我了解到了幾個復雜一些的中國網絡用語
So I want you guys to tell me if you know any of these
不知道你們知不知道這些
And I’m probably going to say them very wrong
我可能發音發的會非常不準
But just for the sake of it, let’s try
不過咱們還是來試試吧
So when you want to say something is good, like something is awesome
當你要描述一個東西很好，棒極了的時候
You’d say Geili
你會說“給力”
When you want to say something is so advanced, it’s beyond you, it’s like cool
當你想說一個東西太高級，超越你水平太多的時候
You’d say like, Bumingjueli
你可以說，不明覺厲
When someone randomly makes a joke about you, especially uses stereotypes for the joke, it’s like come on man, you are killing me, Tangqiang
當一個人開的玩笑莫名奇妙的跟你相關，尤其是用到一些社會觀念的時候
你可以說，躺槍
When you want to say, life is hard man, life is hard enough as it is, why do you need to make it
even harder for me you would say like, Renjianbuchai
當你想說，人生已經夠艱難了，為什么還要揭穿我，讓我過的更不好
你可以說，人艱不拆
So they are some of the really common ones that I learned from my friends inChina
這些是我從一些中國朋友那里了解到的，在中國常用的網絡用語
And what do they show about the Chinese society?
這能讓我們分析出什么呢？
The Internet if you look at it, it’s a method of communication
首先，互聯網提供了一個大眾交流的平臺
It can represent the zeitgeist and the mentality of the people
它可以代表一種時代思潮
After four phrases slash words that we talked about
剛才我們講的這四個短語
Other than geili, three have a similarity
除了給力之外，另外三個都有一個共同點
They all kind of talk about the hardships of life, or the lack of status
他們都在用一種非常幽默的方式去調侃
In a joking way actually, in a really joking way
人生的一些艱難
And when we look at the other one, Geili
讓我們看看另外一個短語，給力
Did you guys know that, the phrase actually started as Bugeili
大家知道嗎，這個詞的首次出現是“不給力”（日和西游記，不給力啊老師）
Which means something that is not awesome, not good, booboo
描述一件事不好，很差勁
That was the meaning of it
這是它的原意
The feeling that I am getting from analyzing these phrases is that
通過分析這些短語，我能感覺到的是
The people ofChinais not completely content with the quality of the life
中國的大部分人民對生活并不百分百滿意
However they are complaining or escaping the reality
但是他們并沒有消極的抱怨，或者逃避現實
They are making light hearted jokes about the situations
他們在開這些情況的玩笑
It’s a way for them to just laugh about it
對一些事一笑而過
This is form of optimism
這是一種積極的心態
These are the power that such phrases in the Internet have
這是網絡用語所擁有的力量
They are not in the dictionary
也許它們不在字典里出現
Okay, that we know, but none the less, they still hold some sort of power, it’s hard to describe
但是盡管如此，它們仍然很有力量
They vary amongst culture
不同文化也有不同的用法
They hold different meanings and they can pass different ideas from one person to another
它們可以在人們之間傳達不同的概念
But none the less, it still has this ability to communicate what the person wants to with the very
short amount of words
最重要的是，它們能夠用非常少的字來清醒的表達一個人想表達的意思
Now let’s bring it back, the conversation to LOL
讓我們回到最一開始的話題，LOL
It seems that, that simple word is getting more popular and popular in the future
這個網絡用語的知名度一直在增加，而且看來未來會持續增長
So what I’m asking myself is, where there ever be a word that will supersede the almighty LOL
所以我的疑問是，未來會不會出現一個用語，超過無上的LOL
Would any of the words like 555, or anyone of them become as great, or even better than that
word
會不會有一個像555這樣的網絡用語，能夠跟它媲美，或者超過它
